just a stone’s throw from austin and san antonio is the quaint gem that is lockhart state park. It sits in between highways 130 and 183, just south of the City of lockhart. What it doesn’t have in extensive camping sites and lengthy trails, it makes up for in charm, solitude, and Bortle 5 skies.

the park caters to RV campers with 10 full hookup sites, and those looking for the convenience of power with an additional 10 electricity-only sites. Unique features include a nine-hole golf course, creek fishing, and a swimming pool, open between Memorial day and labor day. Eleven short but picturesque trails wind their way through the park for a total of 3.7 miles. The shortest is the 0.1-mile Comanche loop, with Chisholm Trail being the longest at 0.7 miles.

Fairway view camping loop is a wagon wheel design with 10 sites, each sporting a covered picnic area and a small shade tree. A small and level grassy field sits in the middle, unobstructed, providing extra space for spreading out scopes and gaining better sightlines towards the horizon.

The clear fork creek camping area is tucked down in the riparian corridor of the creek. Thick trees obscure views of the sky. However, adjacent grassy meridians could be utilized for observing from 50 degrees up to Zenith.

All of the sites within the Fairway View Camping Loop have access to the center of the field and therefore would be adequate for observing. We suggest Sites #2 through #9, leaving sites #1 and #10 to be chosen if all else are unavailable. They are closest in proximity to the restroom and shower house which increases the chance of white light from passing campers. These are full hookup sites, providing access to water, sewer, 30 amp and 50 amp connections, covered picnic tables, fire rings, and upright grills.

Sites are $24 per night with a $3 day-use fee. Due to the limited camping capacity of this park and being one of only three texas state parks with a golf course, reserve your site well in advance.
